How are the children?

Many parents and educators are grappling with this question. They recognize there are
a limited number of children's books that represent and affirm Black children and their lived experience.

As a children’s book author and restorative practices practitioner, my work is centered in building, restoring and repairing relationships. I am a firm believer that healthy relationships begin with self-love. One of the most powerful ways I taught my children self-love was to give them access to Black Children’s books. They loved seeing images that reflected them as well as reading stories that centered them in a positive manner.

Unfortunately, our world is inundated with negative images of the Black Diaspora that cause Black children to question their value and belonging. A 2018 study by the Cooperative Children's Book Center showed that Black children were represented 10% of the time in books compared to their white counterparts being represented 50% of the time. I am committed to transforming that narrative by creating literacy that centers and celebrates Black children and their humanity.

Literacy is a powerful way to expose Black children to images, narratives, language, creativity, culture and history that represent them in a positive manner.
Centering Black children in literature doesn't just benefit Black children, rather it helps people from all cultures to learn about Black culture while increasing diversity in literature.

Help us Affirm, Nurture and Empower Black Children to build
healthy relationships through literacy!
